Kashmir Highway Connecting Ladakh Region Closed Due to Landslides, Rains

zojila pass images (1)SRINAGAR: The national highway, connecting the Ladakh region with the rest of the state, was closed due to landslides, triggered by very heavy rains.

We did not allow any vehicle beyond Sonamarg on this side of the Zojila pass, a traffic police official said here today.

He said similarly Srinagar-bound vehicles from Leh and other parts of the Ladakh region were also stopped on the other side of the Zojila pass, including Drass, Kargil, Matayan, Meenmarg and other places.

Official sources said a large number of vehicles, including trucks loaded with essentials for different parts of the Ladakh region and carrying passengers are stranded on this side of the pass.

Landslide in Zojila pass due to heavy rains during the past 24 hours, forcing authorities to close the highway.

Heavy rains continued due to which there is apprehension of more landslides, they said, adding that the Border Roads Organisation, responsible for the maintenance of the highway, have already put men and sophisticated machine on the job to put through the highway.
However, the highway will be put through once a green signal is received from BRO and traffic police officials that it was safe, they said.
