Jammu, Feb 15 (PTI) Area under Seabuckthorn, a medicinal plant rich in bio-molecules, vitamins and nutritive properties and popularly known as 'Leh Berry', has been assessed at 11,500 hectares in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kahsmir. "The Field Research Laboratory (FRL) Leh through recent satellite imaging and mapping technique has assessed an area of about 11,500 hectares under Seabuckthorn in Ladakh region," a report of National Bank For Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) on State Focus Paper of Jammu and Kashmir said. There is huge potential to setting up units to prepare juices, oils and other items from Seabuckthorn in Ladakh region to give fillip to the economic of the region.

The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh in association with local authorities has setup three units - two in nobra Block and one in Leh belt to manufacture Juices of high medicinal, nutritive and vitamin value besides some oils etc. The Block Level Cooperative consumer stores in Nobra and 12 village level Cooperative and marketing societies were assigned the job of collection and processing of berries to pulp under the overall guidance of Registrar of Cooperative Societies, the report said. Leh based FRL has already patented the process of manufacture of Seabuckthron juice in Ladakh, it said. Seabuckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) popularly knwon as Leh berry or Chhermang or Cherma in ladakh and Lauhul Spiti is a miracle 2-4 meter bush growing wild in high altitude areas of Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, the report revealed. All the parts of this plant are store house of bio-molecules, which have got immense medicinal properties and henance every part of the plant is useful for one purpose or other, it said. The small berries of this bush are rich in its nutritive and medicinal properties and the berries of seabuckthorn are ruch in sources of vitamins.

airportCancellation of the Jet Airways flight to Ladakh left many dejected. 92 passengers, many of whom were on a religious tour, had to make last minute changes in their plans when the flight was cancelled owing to inclement weather.

Visitors from Ladakh were a harassed lot at the Chandigarh airport. The Jet Airways flight to Ladakh on 13th February was cancelled owing to bad weather conditions.  This affected 92 passengers, most of whom were on a religious tour around the city.

The Station Manager of Jet Airways had given a written assurance on the same day saying they were trying to arrange another flight for them. But when the passengers did not receive any information till Monday morning, they gathered at the airport to express their resentment.

The airport authorities said a special flight could not be arranged but efforts were on to accommodate passengers in the flights scheduled for coming weeks. As the day progressed, the flight authorities confirmed tickets to around one third of the total passengers on a flight scheduled for 23rd February. But with a delay of another week, the visitors rued, expenses for the stay and food would burn a hole in their pockets.

Srinagar, Feb 14 (PTI) The vital Srinagar-Jammu national highway remained closed for the second consecutive day today due to fresh snowfall and landslides along the arterial route leading to 1,000 vehicles being stranded on it. The 294km long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, connecting the Kashmir Valley with rest of the country, remained closed for all vehicular movement as there was heavy snowfall at several areas in the Jawahar tunnel-Patnitop section and also heavy rains at Ramban, Superintendent of Police Ramban Anil Magotra said. A traffic department official said six inches of fresh snowfall was recorded at Jawahar tunnel today. Yesterday, one and half feet of snow had accumulated. Hevay snowfall was reported from Jawahar tunnel, Ramso, Batote, Patnitop areas enroute the highway, while landslides occurred at Nashri and Sheri Bibi areas today in Ramban sector, he said. The official said the highway will remain closed till further orders. Over 1,000 vehicles are stranded at various places, including Nagrota, Udhampur, Kud, Ramban and Jawahar tunnel enroute the highway, police said in Jammu. The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway is a vital road link which connects the Valley with the rest of the country and acts as a supply channel for all the essential commodities to the region. Meanwhile, fresh snowfall and rains lashed the Kashmir Valley with minimum temperature in Gulmarg slipping to minus 11.4 degrees Celsius, a drop of 5.4 degrees from last night. The tourist resorts of Gulmarg and Pahalgam today received fresh snowfall for the second consecutive day as the minimum temperature at both the places remained below freezing point. A MeT official said Pahalgam resort in south Kashmir received 45 centimetres of snowfall and Gulmarg received 21 centimetres of snowfall. Weather department has forecast light to moderate snow at few places in the next 24 hours. The summer capital, where the minimum temperature fell to zero degree Celsius, recorded 22.0 millimetres rainfall and snow, the official said. North Kashmir's frontier Kupwara town received 11.6 millimetres of rainfall and snow, the official said. In the remote Ladakh region's Leh town, the minimum temperature fell to minus 7.0 degrees Celsius. Kargil town, also in Ladakh region, recorded a low of minus 10.0 degrees Celsius, the official said.

A Jet Airways flight linking Chandigarh with tourist destination Leh finally took off today, but the response was anything but encouraging. The 10 am flight from the Chandigarh airport had just 29 passengers in the 118 seater aircraft. However, the return flight via New Delhi saw the plane occupied to capacity. A few years back, India Airlines used to operate a Chandigarh-Leh flight, but it is believed that the flight was discontinued due to landing and various technical problems. The Jet Airways flight will operate every Monday and Thursday, and hopefully, officials say, the flight will see more passengers.

Air India will operate an additional flight to Leh area in Ladakh region and ferry stranded passengers.

According to Station Manager, Air India Jammu, Sanjeev Mishri, Air India will operate additional flight to Leh tomorrow at 0950 hours from here.

The departure of the additional flight IL-4450 will take place at 0950 hours from Jammu Airport for Leh. All the stranded passengers of the cancelled flights are advised to report to Jammu Airport at 0830 hours, he said. Air India had cancelled the flight today in view of snowfall in Jammu-Leh sector.

news_9_2_2012_5Leh, Feb 8: Beating the teams of Lalit group, United Ladakh today lifted both men and women titles in the Lalit Ice Hockey Tournament, organised by Lalit Suri Hospitality Group at Karzoo Ice Hockey Rink, Leh in Ladakh.

In the men’s United Ladakh side outplayed their opponents from Lalit Group by four goals to two while the women’s team blanked the same team 3-0 to make it a double title win.

The Lalit Group, through its initiatives, has been promoting tourism through sports and this time selected Ice Hockey as part of winter sports in the region.

Country’s highest ice-skating rink at 3483 meters above sea level, Karzoo Ice Hockey Rink witnessed an enlivening and festive atmosphere. The match was cheered by thousands of locals.
Speaking to the gathering, chairperson and managing director of Lalit Suti Hospitality Group, Dr Jyotsna Suri said, “The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group had promised to the people of J&K that they will be back and give Leh its own unique festival. Today, we are happy to organize the ice hockey match here and would be hosting this every year as our annual event.”
