DSC_0339Leh: 11, January,  2012 - (Visit Ladakh) - The 5th CEC Ice Hockey Championship kicked-off at Leh  today in a great enthusiastic way. Organized in collaboration between  Ladakh Winter Sports Club, Leh and Youth Affairs and Sports Deptt. Leh,  the 7- day tournament was declared open by the Deputy Commissioner, Leh Tsering Angchuk.

The Deputy Commissioner who was the chief guest on the occasion in his address mentioned about active progress on the construction of an International standard Ice Rink in Leh which is coming up at a cost of Rs:4.00 crore. He said that almost 50 percent of the Rink has so far completed by spending Rs: 2.50 crore and Mr. Angchok was much hopeful to hold all the winter events at the newly created stadium in 2013. The DC said that there would be a high level Ice Hockey Tournament at Leh in the coming few days under the banner of “Tourism Promotion Tournament” in which some of foreign players including Canadian High Commission’s team would be participated. The views and proficiency of the skilled foreign players would be sought to ensure that there would be no technical lapses with upcoming Ice Hocky Rink of Leh, Mr. Angchok added.

The Deputy Commissioner appreciated the endeavor of Ladakh Winter Sports Club and the District Youth Affairs and Sports Deptt. who have collectively done excellent job in promoting winter games and producing many of international level players from Ladakh thus earned name and fame for Ladakh in particular and J&K State in general.

Earlier, the District Youth Affairs and Sports Officer, Mr. Fida Hussain Khan welcoming the guests and audiences gave a brief summery on this tournament. He said that 11 Ice hockey teams of Ladakh including one team from Darass ( Kargil) are participating in this tournament. Besides, 4 women teams are also participating in the Woman’s section tournament, he added.

The opening match was played between Skara Team and Ladakh Scouts Blue which was won by Skara by four goals to two.

Later, Mr. PT Kunzang of Ladakh Winter Sports Club delivered vote of thanks.

It is to mention the Inter Club Ice-Hockey Tournament concluded yesterday at Karzoo Ice Rink in which Skara United lifted the Cup defeating Samrah Club Kargil by 03 goals to 02. The final day function was chaired by the SSP, Leh. Vivek Gupta and he gave prizes among the position holders. Mr. Gupta appreciated the ability of the players saying that local players has every potential to compete at international level. Apart from the hockey,  1000 mtrs race and 500 mtrs race among boys and girls under 18 years and 200 mtrs race for kids were also the main highlight of the tournament.
